Greater Glasgow NHS Board Archive
The collection consists principally of the archives of the hospitals in the Glasgow area and in Paisley. These date back to the late eighteenth century when Glasgow Royal Infirmary was established.
Heriot-Watt University Museum & Archive
The museum holds medicine-related archives and objects relating to teaching and research from the University’s origins in 1821 to today: from farriery and pharmacy to a diamond coated artificial hip joint and innovative medical textiles.
Hopetoun House
Hopetoun House is a unique gem of Europe’s architectural heritage and undoubtedly ‘Scotland’s finest stately home’. There is an extensive Estate archive including 17th century medical correspondence between Scottish Physicians and Herman Boerhavve of Leiden.
Lothian Health Services Archive
The LHSA is a rich repository for NHS institutional administrative and clinical records, private papers, photographs and objects relating to the history of health care in the Lothian region and the history of medicine in Scotland. Access is free to anyone with an interest in the records. Access Restrictions are applied where records are covered by the Data Protection Act and NHS Confidentiality Guidelines.
Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow
The College Archive contains the administrative records of College dating from 1602 onwards. It also houses important collections relating to physicians, surgeons and dentists including the papers of Sir William Macewen and Joseph, Lord Lister.
Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
The RCAHMS records and interprets information about Scotland's built environment. Archives include hospitals, asylums and medical buildings throughout Scotland. Free public access.
Royal Scottish Academy
A collection of Scottish art, relating to the last 200 years. This contains anatomical manuals and engravings, including work by Durer, Vesalius and Albinus, and life drawings by Scottish nineteenth century artists.
Scottish Borders Archive
Scottish Borders Archives is moving to a new facility the 'Heritage Hub' in Hawick, due to open Apil 2007. In preparation for the move, the archives remain open at their present location on Mondays and Thursdays only, 9am-5pm, by appointment. The service will close between 23 December and March 23rd 2007.
University of Aberdeen, Special Libraries & Archives
Important collections of early printed books and archives of the first English-speaking university with a chair in medicine (1497). Complete libraries, personal papers from Scotland and the colonies, case notes, early lecture notes from Aberdeen and continental universities.
University of Dundee Archive Services
Collections include records of the Tayside Health Board covering Boards of Management, hospitals and asylums in Dundee, Perth and Angus; archives relating to teaching and research in medicine carried out at the University; papers of local organisations and individuals with medical connections; and archives relating to medical missionaries who practised overseas.
University of Glasgow Archive Services
Although the founding charter of 1451 provided for the teaching of medicine, formal teaching did not begin on a regular basis at the University of Glasgow until 1714. Records documenting the people and events surrounding the University’s medical history are available to all by appointment.
