The collection comprises historical medical and sick room equipment used in and around Dumfries, with accompanying documents, prints and photographs. The exhibition tells the story of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, where ether anaesthetic was used for the first time in Europe; the town’s precautions against the Plague and the devastating Cholera epidemics of the 19th century which resulted in the introduction of clean piped drinking water to the inhabitants; the medical and antiquarian collections of Dr T B Grierson, a 19th century country doctor in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire; and the development of the Crichton Royal Infirmary where care of the mentally ill was pioneered.
