Dr David Kinloch by unknown heraldic painter, 1614
The oldest painting in the University's collection is that of the 16th century Dundee doctor David Kinloch. Born in 1560, Kinloch graduated from St Andrews University and in 1588 made a fateful journey to Spain during which he was imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition. The story goes that Kinloch escaped execution only after curing the Grand Inquisitor of illness, though this seems highly improbable! In 1597 Kinloch was made Royal Physician to King James VI.
