Medicina Domestica, Madrid
A Spanish translation of Domestic Medicine, or The Family Physician, first published in English in 1769, by William Buchan (1728/9-1805). Buchan, who was born at Ancrum in Roxburghshire, practised first in Yorkshire, and then moved to Edinburgh about 1766. Domestic Medicine was probably the most popular of all pre-20th century health guides. It was published in at least 142 separate English-language editions before 1871, and also appeared in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Welsh, Italian, German, Russian, Dutch and Swedish translations, not to mention a Japanese abridgement.
